Help a refugee by opening your home.
Respect and Dignity: All individuals sharing homes under the Refugee Housing Canada program must treat each other with respect and dignity, regardless of their cultural, religious, or personal backgrounds.
Privacy: Respect each other's privacy and personal space. Knock before entering private areas and obtain permission before using personal belongings.
Cleanliness: Maintain a clean and hygienic living environment. Share responsibilities for common areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms, and ensure they are kept tidy.
Communication: Open and respectful communication is vital. Address concerns or issues promptly and constructively, and be open to listening to others' viewpoints.
Safety: Ensure the safety of all individuals living in the house. During move-in, share emergency contacts. Hosts must also provide renters an overview of the house safety features and tools including the location of fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and emergency exits. In case of emergencies, follow safety protocols and contact emergency services.
Cultural Sensitivity: Be mindful of cultural and religious differences. Refrain from any actions or behaviors that may be discriminatory, cause discomfort or offense to others.
Guests: Inviting guests should be discussed with the host and prior consent should be obtained by the host before inviting guests into the shared space. Overnight guests should be discussed and agreed upon.
Noise: All individuals should agree on quiet hours. During these hours, there shall be no use of sound amplifying equipment. Be mindful of others and please keep voices and other sounds to a reasonable level.
Expenses: Clearly establish how bills and expenses will be shared and paid. Maintain transparency and honesty in financial matters.
Conflict Resolution: When conflicts arise, attempt to resolve them through open and respectful dialogue. If necessary, seek assistance from Refugee Housing Canada support staff who may connect you to a mediator the parties involved expense.
Termination of Shared Living Arrangement: If any participant wishes to terminate the shared living arrangement, they should provide reasonable notice and cooperate to ensure a smooth transition for all parties involved.
Legal Compliance: Abide by all local, provincial, and federal laws, including those related to housing and tenancy.
Discrimination: Refrain from any form of discrimination or harassment based on race, religion, nationality, gender, or any other protected characteristic.
By adhering to this code of conduct, Refugee Housing Canada parties contribute to a harmonious and inclusive living environment that benefits all. Failure to comply with this code of conduct may result in the termination of the housing arrangement.
This code of conduct is a guideline and can be further customized to meet the specific needs and policies of Refugee Housing Canada.
Refugees are arriving to Metro Vancouver daily. Many need a place to call home until they find a permanent home.
As a Host you will be helping a refugee start a new chapter of their life in Canada. We are looking for hosts who can rent a spare bedroom, suite, or part of their home to refugees.
Hosts may provide free housing for a period of time, or may charge fair rental rates.
